Winners and Contest

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

In celebration and anticipation of the release of THE BRIDGE OF PEACE on August 31, I’m having a month of contests.

To read the first chapter or order online, go to

http://www.cindywoodsmall.com/books/bridge-of-peace_excerpt.php

I posted a contest yesterday on my Facebook pages, both Friends and Fans. The response was so amazing! Readers never cease to awe me with their support! Thank you. Because of yesterday’s contest, we have TWELVE winners. Each one will receive an autographed copy of The Bridge of Peace. I tallied the number of entrants and used Random.org to choose the winners. Because everyone’s full or partial name wasn’t listed on Amazon, I’ve listed what name or tag was used, and then I’ve shown the comment that person left. I didn’t notice any duplicate names being used, but if only your first name or partial name is used on Amazon, please be sure to verify your tag/name with the comment to make sure it matches what you wrote. If you’re a winner, please e-mail me privately at cindy [at] cindywoodsmall [dot] com or you can contact me by going to http://www.cindywoodsmall.com/contact.php. Please send your name and mailing address. If you’d like the book autographed to someone other than you, just let me know.

I can’t wait for book 2.”

12. Candygram ~ “I love all of Cindy’s books. She’s so true to the Amish ways and her stories are delightful. I go to Lancaster County at least once a year for 20+ years and have become friends with some of the Amish so I feel she’s right on target. She keeps you wanting more.”

Blog ~ Great News and a Contest!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I’m busting at the seams! There is so much good news that I want to share with you.

First, I asked my publisher if they could offer a limited-time special for my readers, and they did it!

Here’s the offer. During the month of June, When the Heart Cries e-book is on sale for $1.59! Wow! You can download the e-book onto your computer, certain cell phones, or onto an e-reader like Kindle, Nook, or Sony Reader. (Sony Reader currently has the price listed at $1.99.)

I hope you’ll help to make this fantastic deal worth all the effort it took for my publisher to provide it. I want to encourage them to offer specials like this again, so please tell your family and friends about this promotional deal.

Remember, this offer is only good during the month of June.

Coming out in November is another great deal: an omnibus of the Sisters of the Quilt series! An omnibus is a volume of several books combined into one (usually reprinted works of a single author).

All three books in the Sisters of the Quilt series—When the Heart Cries, When the Morning Comes, and When the Soul Mends—will be in one paperback book and sold for $19.99! The title of the omnibus is the title of the series, Sisters of the Quilt, and it will be available this November at Walmart and other bookstores. I’m glad that my publisher has found a solution for my readers who wanted all three books in one.

All three novels from the Sisters of the Quilt series coming out in one book–aptly titled Sisters of the Quilt.

In other great news, The Hope of Refuge is a Christy Award finalist. As a reader you may be unaware of this award, but it’s a prestigious honor to final. Publishers of inspirational fiction enter the best books they’ve published that year into the contest, and the competition is stiff. Added to that, both of my 2009 releases, The Hope of Refuge and The Sound of Sleigh Bells, are finalists for the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Contest sponsored by Faith, Hope, and Love (the Inspirational Outreach Chapter of the RWA—Romance Writers of America).

On another note of fun news, I have five new novels under contract. I’m very excited about writing those stories. I’m currently working on a nonfiction book. I’m writing it with an Old Order Amish friend. The title of the book is Plain Wisdom, An Invitation into an Amish Home and the Hearts of Two Women. Its release date is March 15, 2011! I’ll have excerpts and a book cover to share with you in the next newsletter.

All of the news I’ve just shared plus much more—like book signings, an upcoming Amish trip giveaway, and a special contest—is in my newsletter, Plain News. The newsletter is free and goes out approximately four times a year. You may receive five in a year if I have a special event that was planned so unexpectedly it wasn’t listed in the previous newsletter. The next newsletter is scheduled to go out soon. To sign up, follow this link: http://www.cindywoodsmall.com/newsletter.php

Now for a blog contest! To celebrate all the good news, I’m giving away an Amish-made wall hanging along with five autographed copies of my books. One winner will receive an autographed book and the Amish-made wall hanging. The other four will each win an autographed book. Winners can choose which titles they want. (You may even choose an upcoming release, but I can’t send those until they’re available. :-))

Winners will be chosen randomly on June 29. To enter, just leave a comment below. If you’re reading this anywhere other than my home-page blog (like Facebook), you need to go to my Web site to enter. (http://www.cindywoodsmall.com) Only comments listed on my Web site are entered into the contest. (It would be nearly impossible to gather all comments posted everywhere else.) By entering this contest you agree to have your name posted on my blog if you’re one of the winners. Unless an unforeseen interruption takes place, I’ll post the winners’ names here and contact them via e-mail on June 29.

I give a warm denki (thank you) to my readers who’ve inspired me in so many ways. And thanks to everyone in my publishing house!

Gross Dank un bis schpaeder (Many thanks and til later),

Cindy

This contest is now closed. I want to thank everyone who participated. Your comments and good wishes are most appreciated. Congratulations to our five winners!  Brenda Barber, Sheila Groves, Wendy Glosser, Verna Reinbold and Kristina Petrella have each won an autographed copy of a book of their choice. Brenda is also the winner of the wall hanging. Keep watching for a new contest!

Guest Melanie Dobson and a New Contest!

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

This contest is now closed. I want to thank everyone who participated. You all made it a lot of fun! Congratulations to our winner, Patti Thiele! She has won an autographed copy of Melanie Dobson’s new book, Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa and an Amish-made wall hanging. A new contest will be starting soon!

I have a guest blogger today—Melanie Dobson. She’s the author of the recently released Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa, a novel set in the 1800s in the Amana Colonies.  If you enjoy Amish fiction, I think you’ll enjoy reading Melanie’s book about the Amana Colonies. I did.

Here’s Melanie Dobson, sharing an account of her first night in an Old Order Amish home.
`

What would I say? The question haunted me as the town lights faded away along with the electrical wires and traffic on a country road near Sugarcreek, Ohio. I was on my way to the home of Eli and Mary, an Old Order Amish couple, but even though I grew up in the hills of Amish country, I’d never actually spent much time with an Amish family and certainly had never spent the night in an Amish home. On this research trip, I wanted to find out what delighted an Amish woman’s heart, but I knew the answer to that question wasn’t in the asking. It was in the discovery. And I wasn’t sure how to discover it.
`

In my ignorance, I’d already made up my mind what Old Order Amish woman would be like on the outside—judgmental, stern, and certainly not accepting of an English woman like me who thrived on cell phone service and WiFi. But after I drove into Eli and Mary’s snowy yard that evening, Mary greeted me with a wide smile before I stepped out of my car. She guided me to my room in their large basement. Instead of making me feel like an outsider, she opened the gas-powered refrigerator and pulled out a bowl filled with apples, grapes, and bananas along with fresh pastries she’d purchased for me to eat. In that moment, I felt like a welcomed guest in her home.

`
As we poured hot water over bags of chamomile tea, Eli wandered down to the basement, and in the quietness of the evening, the three of us talked about their eight grown children and my two girls and about my upcoming novel set in Amish country and how Mary and Eli visited the beach in North Carolina many years ago with a vanload of Amish friends. Eli told me about the waterline they’d connected to their son’s home next door, and Mary’s eyes lit up as she described the challenging new puzzle she’d been working on before I arrived.

`
The longer we talked and snacked, the more comfortable we all became. I pulled out my laptop to show them pictures of my girls, and my photos of Hawaii and California and Oregon’s Mt. Hood mesmerized Eli. Mary was fascinated by the workings of the computer.

`
When the conversation slowed, I took a deep breath and told Mary that I’m terrible at putting together puzzles, but if she wanted the little help I could offer, I’d love to work with her. She sprung up from her chair, questioning to see if I was sincere. When I assured her that I was, she told me we had to finish by nine o’clock so she and Eli could go to bed. Nine was fine with me.
`

At the kitchen table, Mary and I poured over the thousand tiny pieces that were supposed to form a Thomas Kincaid picture, and on that dark winter evening, I discovered that Mary was clearly passionate about puzzles. With succinct direction, she assigned me portions to put together. The flowers. The chimney. Parts of the border. Even though my fingers were much, much slower than hers, it was an honor to work alongside her as she deliberated and persisted until she found the right matches for every piece.

`
Eli snored in the chair beside us, and behind us, a clock played classical music every hour. Nine o’clock passed, and Mary ignored the late hour. She was focused on the pieces in front of her, and we quietly cheered each other on. When the clock chimed again, it was ten o’clock.

`
“We have to finish this window before we go to bed,” Mary said, fire in her words and her eyes.
I nodded. “Let’s finish the window.”

`
Sifting through the hundreds of pieces yet to find a match, we slowly uncovered the glass panes and window frame.
`

The evening ended when the window was complete though I believe Mary could have stayed up all night if she didn’t have to leave for service at sunrise. She woke her husband long after ten, and I wandered back down to my quilted bed under the kitchen and sat by the furnace, thinking about how much I’d enjoyed my evening with her.
`

It didn’t matter that I wore jeans and a sweater and Mary wore a blue dress and white bonnet. It didn’t matter that our backgrounds and our present day worlds were so very different. Even though she’d chosen a plain lifestyle, her talents were anything but plain. God created her with a determination to create order out of chaos. Beauty even, out of ashes. Although I don’t usually enjoy puzzles, I was caught up in her joy and enthusiasm for piecing together a complex picture that evening. It was a delight for me to see beyond my new friend’s plain attire and glimpse just a bit into the passion of her heart.
`

Cindy here again ~ Melanie spent last summer learning about the passions and heritage of the Amana women in the late 1800s before she wrote her latest historical novel, Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa. I read that book and really enjoyed it. You can find it at your local bookstore, or you can order it online through Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, CBD, or Amazon.
